The story of Coastal Jazz is the story of determination, passion, idealism, community, and of course, music. Founded in 1985 as the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, we incorporated in 1986 as a community-based, not-for-profit, charitable arts organization located in Vancouver, British Columbia. From the very beginning, Coastal has worked diligently to ensure jazz remains an integral part of our city’s vibrant arts scene by fostering the creation and exchange of sounds and ideas between the local, national, and international music communities.

Our mission is to not only increase the appreciation of the music, but to strengthen the arts community by developing special projects, artistic exchanges, partnerships, educational initiatives, community programs, and collaborations that further the art form. Our vision encompasses a wide spectrum of jazz, blues, world, creative, and improvised music, including evolving forms of jazz and the technologies and media that influence jazz as an art form.

Today, Coastal Jazz ranks as one of BC’s largest not-for-profit music presenters producing the annual Vancouver International Jazz Festival as well as presenting local, national, and international artists throughout the year. Along with music presentation, Coastal Jazz has a long-standing commitment to music education, presenting the Sounds of Youth stage performances, mentorship through the Vancouver Youth Jazz Orchestra, workshops by local and international artists and more.

Coastal Jazz is also a significant part of Vancouver and BC’s economic engine and tourism industry, attracting well over one hundred thousand people to the annual jazz festival and generating over $20 million in economic activity.

Jose Hernandez

My name is Jose Ruben Hernandez Rodriguez, over the last 30 years I have worked for the communications industry in my hometown. I´m a lover and passionate about moving images, I started my career in the early 90's in Radiopolis for a radio station WFM 96.9 as a promo producer, Televisa San Angel within the Quality Control Coordination and as 1AD of Betty Sheridan, who was an important TV Director. In 1997 I started my own company; EnMedio (first communication agency in Mexico) in which I participated as Creative Director and Producer for at least 14 years, implementing successful communications and marketing campaigns for important companies. Since 2007 I am a partner of BF Digital (Boyler Films SC) and Collector Media Makers, working as a video producer, mainly focusing in communications, public relations and marketing areas for different brands-products and companies in Mexico. In 2018 I had the opportunity to work in the documentary Ayotzinapa, el paso de la Tortuga, currently in Netflix, as a post-production supervisor under the production of Bertha Navarro and three-time Academy Award-winning Guillermo del Toro. With this wonderful experience I discovered the importance of documentary filmmaking and that is why I came to study in Vancouver. In September 2023 I graduated from Film Production Program (Diploma) at InFocus Film School. With the aim of expanding my graphics skills, I am currently studying Graphic Design Diploma at VCC Goal. Create pieces that provoke the viewer. Develop, transcend... Grow!
